Long Time 03:20
Long Time Well you know it’s been a long time since you said you loved me Well you know it’s been a long time we walked together And I don’t know oh, if I can pass that way again I don’t know, I know but I do miss you holding me Do it again, ’cause you know it’s been a long time Well, no I just don’t remember when I saw the light of honesty Well, no I just don’t remember when I broke that thread that leads me home And I don’t know oh, if I can just dive down again And maybe find… the end I don’t know, if I can reach inside myself To bring it home, bring it home to you I know you know me too well for talking, so you say “Shut your mouth, and come right over and hold me… “Do it again, well I want you to do it again” ‘Cause you know it’s been a long time well, since that telephone carried your voice Well you know it’s been a long time since we stepped across the threshold Well that was then, so many years have come and gone This is now, and yes, and I do miss you holding me Do it again, well I want you to do it again Well you know it’s been a long time since you said you loved me, yeah You loved me, you loved me, you loved me Well you know it’s been a long time, long time, long time, long time… Well you know it’s been a long… time… Well it’s been a long time

Tell Me Once More You walked out on the beach, you opened up the empty reach Where I was much too scared to go, then you turned and said “I told you so” Under an open sky you told me I was far too shy And if you don’t get what you want, you always seem to get what you need But you know I don’t get anything until the shot hits me and rings My ears are much too sensitive—they cannot hear the obvious And not until the language burns, lives around the axis turn The fearful vertigo of night when dizzy stars sing boastfully now Of their distance from the small, small speck of this small system Tell me once more that I am not alone So lost in insignificance I wonder at the empty chance That offered me a finer love, then took it with another hand And now I hear you’re wandering and finding it in many things But you can’t even steel yourself to drive the 20 miles to my town And see me smile, because it’s far, far beyond me where you’re going And I don’t want to fall down with you this time You got lost on those beaches, swallowed (up) by the empty reaches I was much too scared to follow, wondering how much this hollow man Can take a step away from this, sometimes I feel a sense of peace But that’s just something for the record, because it never stays to tea And you’ve lost from the inside what I lost from the outside Tell me once more that I am not alone You know I don’t get… anything until the shot hits me and rings My ears are much too sensitive—they never hear the obvious And not until your language burned, and lives around the axis turned The fearful vertigo of night when dizzy stars sing boastfully now Of their distance from the small, small speck of this small system Tell me once more that I am not alone Tell me once more, tell me once more that I am not alone Tell me once more, tell me once more… That I am not alone Tell me once more, tell me once more…

Wish I Were 03:38
Wish I Were I wish I were your journey I wish I were your car Mmmmm, Your destination I wouldn’t care how far Wish I were your roadmap So you could turn the pages Your fingers, soft upon me, yeh I wish I were your love, oh yeah Well, I wish I were, I wish I were I wish I were your first step On a journey of a thousand miles I wish this were a beginning And we could look into the past Well, you put arms around me And we talk the moon into the sky Now your head’s upon my shoulder And I wish I were your love, oh yeah I wish I were I wish I were the doorway That you are stepping through I wish I was in the same room With my arms around your dreams And if I have intruded I don’t apologise I wish we could cross the boundary, yeh I wish I were your love Oh yeh, oh yeh, I wish I were I wish I were I wish I were… your love I wish I were

Dawn Bird 03:20
Dawn bird Family’s tears on an open grave People down there too late to save Crying is never going to bring them back alive That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches Every struggle is a struggle now under one flag Red with blood and black from the fire If it hurts that bad, you’ve got to fight back That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches Could be you who’s living in a town somewhere Waiting for the time when the uniforms say: “Tomorrow it’s you—you’ve got to give way” That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches Hoping there’s a chance you’ll get your share But all you hear is ‘for your own protection’ You can stand like a wire in the wind—let me see you That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches Don’t cut too high don’t stand too proud Or you’ll be a short time in this world You’d better learn your lesson or keep to the gutter (Garbled in recording as “ if you think you keep the gutter” That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches Your mothers and fathers were long in this land Be a long time coming, be a long time gone The evil grows fast so it’s easy cut down That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches Nothing grows slower than the hardest wood Be a long time growing, be a long-time fruit The seeds that fall going to grow real tall (Garbled in recording as “gonna real fruit”!) That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches You’ve got to keep on pushing ’til the wall comes down keep on shouting ’til the heads all turn they will love you with a bullet if they think it’s necessary That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches Fight so strong that it doesn’t leave a scar; There’s an army out there waiting for the word And they keep on coming, can’t stop the river flowing Saying: world, oh world, you’ve got to turn round This time, this time you’ve got to hear this voice World, oh world, oh take some action That’s when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches, when the dawn bird approaches When the dawn bird approaches (x6 or whatever)

Don’t Give Up A candle burning in the middle of the night fades in the morning sun Seems like it lights up everything around, but our eyes have grown too dim, grown too dim One more time before you have to go—I really want to kiss you again We spent the afternoon in the afterglow, far from this cruel world, cruel world Don’t give up too soon, oh my children Change is coming, change is coming—and it’s coming soon… Young man lying by the side of the road just a shadow in the morning light His last sunrise was yesterday—now his eyes have grown too dim, grown too dim You don’t read a book by flipping the pages—leaving no time to breathe And the city will mould itself around you, even when you’re down on your knees, down on your knees Don’t give up too soon, oh my children Change is coming, change is coming—and it’s coming soon… Don’t you know it’s coming soon Don’t you give up too soon, don’t you give up too soon, don’t you give up too soon… (Party noises!) Don’t give up too soon, oh my children Change is coming, change is coming—and it’s coming soon… Don’t you know it’s coming soon I saw through the haze just the other day to a world that lies beyond It’s a place that’s been there all along—if we could just remember the road, remember the road, remember the road Don’t give up too soon…

Lost to the World There’s one sure thing to take you all the way There’s one sure thing—that’s what you used to say Waiting for that “holy day” When together are we all Come hold this gentle hand You have found, you have found, you have found The way (so you say)… to heaven, to heaven To heaven, now keep those feet, walking right on Don’t you think it’s time to remember Don’t you see you need the touch of the mender Who’ll make you whole again Ready for this game This is it my friend You have found, you have found, you have found The way (so you say)… to heaven, to heaven To heaven, now keep those feet, walking right on to heaven, to heaven, to heaven… (So you say)

Something You Don’t Know Free from the moorings, cut free from my blind trusting I was afraid but the stars spoke of a home and a harbour I had no rudder so I gave my tiller to the weather-vane And sailed into port with the moon rising low I know something you don’t know I know something you don’t know I could never explain, So please don’t ask me why I wake every day with a voice over my left shoulder saying that Death is your friend—it's taking you to places that you’d never go, If you thought your life was forever you’d give yourself away too freely Never sail into port with the moon rising low I know something you don’t know I know something you don’t know I could never explain, So please don’t ask me why I could never explain, So please don’t ask me why I look in the mine of your eye, in the rich, deep vein of this trust, and The face in the mirror’s the same; we wonder where the time has gone If you thought that this was forever, and we have ourselves away so freely Then we sailed into port with the moon rising low I know something you don’t know I know something you don’t know I could never explain, So please don’t ask me why I could never explain, So please don’t ask me why I know something you don’t know I know something you don’t know

Hidden Beauty A part of me is here with you But there's another far away Where the old stones lie beneath the naked sky And their blanket is the wind, the wind And their blanket is the silver lines Silver lines they cross the land And where they meet is where I'll stand When the rising and the setting Sun does shine At the four quarters of the year The four quarters of the year Where the old stones dance and the hilltops shine With the music of a thousand stars, the stars The music of the stars in the empty spaces Empty space is all around But we were born on the blue-green globe Where sorrow clouds the sky, the sky And hidden beauty lies…

Out to Sea 02:23

about

This album contains all songs recorded in the 1990s with my good friends Chris Conway and Dan Britton in Leicestershire-based band The Storm Thieves in the UK. There was never a real end to the band, we all just drifted into playing music elsewhere until the last gig in 2014 (bonus items include photos of that last gig). The lyrics are all here too.

The bonus items for the download version include a variety of photos from the time, including a couple of Bayou Club audience images by Chris Conway, as well as three original hand-written lyrics sheets, including a very long sheet with the early Dawn Bird lyrics that kept mutating :-)

With harmonies and creative contributions from both, some of these songs ended up quite different from the versions in my head, others more or less remained as written, and yet others went on to evolve further in Loscoe State Opera (similar ‘solo’ album in the pipeline). If I were to record them again, no doubt they’d evolve further, but these versions evoke the happy/sad times in which they were originally recorded.

Finally, a few people kept asking me for a ‘solo’ Storm Thieves album ages ago so—if you’re one of them—apologies for the decades-long delay, here it is!
